Tho Ha

Tho Ha VillageTho Ha village is situated on the bank of Cau River, about 35km from Hanoi, in Viet Yen district, Bac Giang province. Tho Ha means “the land surrounded by river”, it has the population of 3,500 inhabitants and the area of 20 hectares. To visit the place, tourist needs to take a local ferry to cross Cầu River.
The ancient village has still preserved many traditional and historical values as banyan tree, river wharf, village’s gate, communal house (built in 1685), Tho Ha pagoda (built in the 16th century), temple, family chapels and old houses nestled in the narrow and zigzag alleys. Different from other Northern villages, the locals here did not rely on rice cultivation for earn-living but pottery and floating market on the river. Tho Ha used to be a famous place of Gốm Sành (pottery without glaze fired with dry grass and then firewood and coal). In the early 1980s, Tho Ha villagers turned to making rice pancakes, rice papers and raising animals as pigs, chickens and ducks. As pottery was gradually abandoned.
You will discover here a real rural life with the daily activities of the locals and the broken parts of terracotta built into the walls attracted film producers, painters and photographers.
